About Blackwater Mine: 
Situated 73 kms south-east of Emerald, Blackwater is the second-largest open-cut metallurgical coal mine in the Bowen Basin. This long-life operation began in 1967 and has grown to become one of the longest coal mines in the Southern Hemisphere, with a strike length of approximately 70 kms. Blackwater extracts high quality metallurgical and thermal coal for the export market using 7 draglines with associated truck/shovel prestrip and coal mining. 


About the Role 

Whitehaven Coal have a new exciting opportunity in our Health & Safety team for a Compliance Specialist. The role is responsible for supporting the mine in coordinating, improving and governing the Safety and Health Management System (SHMS) through the use of Compliance activities, systems and processes.

 

What You’ll Do 

  • Reporting to the Site Systems Superintendent, the responsibilities of this role include:
  • Lead audit and compliance activities to ensure compliance and adherence to the site health and safety management system and ensure its effectiveness including the identification and implementation of site and business or industry wide initiatives.
  • Promote a culture of compliance amongst all levels of the business and with external stakeholders
  • Conduct inspection, performance & compliance activities along with analysis of Health & Safety systems to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Develop, maintain and govern requirements for the site’s Safety and Health Management System (SHMS).
  • Provide technical support to applicable SHMS access systems which support Coal Mine Workers (CMW’s).
  • Identify and lead initiatives to bridge any identified gaps, facilitate change and embed new systems to support the continuous improvement of the SHMS.
  • Lead and participate in audits (internal and external) and provide guidance on safety systems and/or risk management related matters

 

What You’ll Bring 

  • Mining industry experience (highly desirable), with proven experience in the development and implementation of health and safety management systems and processes (essential)
  • Proven experience in the provision of advice as the subject matter expert on health & safety-related legislative, business, and site requirements.
  • Ability to work within a team providing a customer-focused advisory service.
  • Proficient computer skills with a high level of attention to detail
  • Hold or be able to obtain Coal Board Medical, Standard 11 (essential) and RIIRIS402E Carry Out the Risk Management Process (desirable)
