Superintendent Shutdowns is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing the execution of large-scale maintenance or operational shutdowns within a coal mining operation. These shutdowns are critical for conducting major repairs, upgrades, or safety checks that cannot be performed during regular operations. The role demands technical expertise, leadership skills, and an understanding of mining processes
Responsibilities:
- Develop & implement the construction plan & monitoring progress in respect of time, costs & quality;
- Promoting a working environment that is safe & healthy & protects the environment;
- Reviewing & appraising the contractors’ plans & schedules;
- Monitoring Shutdown work for compliance with engineering drawings, design specifications, owner’s standards & statutory regulations;
- Maintaining & fostering relationships & contacts & liaison with the owner’s team in respect of technical issues, specifications & variations;
- Monitoring & reporting on contractors’ performance;
- Identifying contract variations, negotiating minor variations or additional work within overall scope & participating in negotiations in respect of scope changes;
- Ensuring that the highest standards of health, safety & environmental management are implemented;
- Developing teams & individual competence Develop comprehensive shutdown schedules, ensuring minimal impact on production timelines.
- Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, production, and supply chain teams to identify shutdown requirements and ensure all resources are available.
- Coordinate with external contractors, suppliers, and other stakeholders to meet project deadlines.
- Assess potential risks associated with the shutdown and develop mitigation strategies.
- Ensure that all shutdown activities comply with safety regulations, environmental laws, and company policies.
- Conduct hazard assessments and implement safety plans to protect workers and equipment.
- Lead the onsite execution of major shutdowns, ensuring that all activities are carried out according to the planned schedule.
- Act as the central point of communication between different stakeholders, ensuring alignment and resolving any issues that arise.
- Monitor the progress of work and make adjustments to optimise workflow.
- Conduct post-shutdown assessments to review the success of the shutdown, identifying areas for improvement.
- Prepare detailed reports on shutdown performance, including any incidents, delays, or deviations from the plan.
- Ensure a smooth handover to production teams post-shutdown.
- Develop and implement strategies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of future shutdowns.
What you will need
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Suitable qualifications or experience within large complex project management.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in maintenance or operations within the mining industry, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role managing large-scale shutdowns.
- An understanding of shutdown management software and tools (e.g., Primavera, MS Project).
- Solid understanding of mining operations, equipment, and maintenance needs.
